A startup uses AI to diagnose neonatal conditions through crying. A revolution for newborn care in developing countries.
Co-founder of Ubenwa Health
Charles is the co-founder of Ubenwa Health, a start-up based in Montreal that is building the first technology for the detection of neurological conditions in newborns using the sound of their cries. After his experience working with NGOs in his native Nigeria, Charles spent years researching audio signal processing and machine learning, in order to apply these techniques to newborn cries with the goal of detecting conditions present at birth. As a PhD candidate at Mila, he has received numerous recognitions, including a Vanier Fellowship (the highest honour for doctoral students) from the Canadian government, and a Rising Star in AI award from Harvard University.
